Our Forum is an independent voluntary organisation based in the London Borough of Enfield. Established in 1999, we now have more than 5,000 members aged 50 and over but work across the generations to improve the lives of all residents.
We have two main aims
- to inform our members about policies and events that affect their lives and to campaign for a better, fairer society, especially for older people
- to offer a wide range of activities to help our members keep socially and physically active
Regular meetings with interesting speakers
We hold meetings at various venues around the borough, including the last Tuesday of every month at the Civic Centre. This gives everyone the chance to hear – and question – speakers from the council, health bodies, government departments, police etc on how their policies and initiatives will affect us all. We also have talks from groups and individuals covering anything from caring for relatives or dealing with bereavement to building a family tree or avoiding scams.

We run an annual Winter Fair Day, Falls Prevention Day and Fun(d)-raising Day which all offer information, entertainment and the chance to participate in a range of activities.
Newsletter & weekly e-News
The newsletters list upcoming Forum events and meetings, highlight issues of general interest and explain how proposed council and government policies will affect Over 50s and why we are lobbying the relevant bodies.
8,000 copies of the printed newsletter are distributed every two months, to libraries, doctors surgeries and council premises as well as to members.
Members can sign up to the e-News which also lists many activities and social events in the Borough.
A range of experts attend our sessions at Dugdale Centre every Monday morning to offer members initial advice on pensions, benefits, tax, housing, cutting heating bills and keeping healthy. The police and hearing test people also attend once a month.
Members of the Forum’s Executive Committee and others continue to fight for the right to be heard. And it works. Enfield councillors and officers recognise the Forum’s influence and we contribute towards formulating council policy.
We also present ideas/petitions/feedback to both local and national consultative and regulatory bodies (including health and transport) in order to highlight the needs of older people.

The volunteers in our Social Events Team organise trips to a wide range of places of interest, theatres, restaurants etc. Locations are local, London, UK and even worldwide. Recent places include museums, art galleries, a prison restaurant, Roman baths, the seaside, a music hall, a brewery, a farm and a golf club. Activities have included white water rafting, dancing, sailing, visiting otherwise inaccessible buildings as well as the usual sightseeing and eating/drinking.

Any member who has ideas for places to visit is encouraged to contact the Social Events Team and get assistance so he/she can organise the event themselves.
